TRICK OF THE EYE (2024) premiered at DCTV in New York’s Chinatown in December of 2024.
The 6 minute short is a narrative exploration of the death of a private life through a portrait of a fictional public figure's decision to remove herself from the public eye.
In a found-footage montage style, using archival material, home videos, and direct interviews, “A LINE OF SYMMETRY” examines a family history of medical misinformation, generational cycles, cigarettes, and a profound religious experience through the perspectives of three generations of women.
KAREN, a former smoker, recounts the day she quit smoking after a profound religious experience. KARI-ANN, her daughter, tells us the same story with the caveat that she experienced the health repercussions of her mother’s decisions and of medical misinformation relayed to her mother at the time. The interviews are preseted to the viewer through the eyes of a young SOPHIA, the filmmaker at 5 years old. Her description of what she learned in kindergarten, symmetrical lines, creates a poetic backdrop for the story, implying that she is one-half each of these women, and the product of the dynamic itself.
